How to Make Your Pop-Up Blocker Allow Some Pop-Ups

Important
If you are using a "pop-up blocker" program, you will need to configure it to allow pop-up windows within some web sites. This is required in order for the some e-commerce applications to work correctly, for example.

What are "Pop-up blockers?"
"Pop-up blockers" are small programs that many users and software vendors have chosen to install in web browsers to prevent "pop-up windows" from opening unexpectedly while browsing the World Wide Web. These programs can be very effective in reducing the amount of unwanted advertisement-related pop-ups. However, they also prevent some critical parts of legitimate web pages from working correctly.

Why allow pop-ups on some web sites?
Sometimes a web site contains pages that need to open separate windows to display crucial content. Many pop-up blockers treat these windows as if they were unwanted advertisements. Because of cases like this, most pop-up blockers provide the ability to grant special permission to specific sites to allow pop-up windows on those sites.

AOL Pop-Up Blocker Configuration

When you're visiting a Web page using AOL, a pop-up control displays at the bottom of the window. Click the control to access various options. For example, you can choose to allow pop-ups from the site you are visiting right now (CharlineAndJamie.com), and you can change your pop-up preferences from there.

To set your pop-up preferences:

  1. Sign on to AOL.
  2. On the AOL Toolbar click Settings, and then click Preferences.
  3. On the "By AOL Feature" tab, scroll down to click Pop-ups.
  4. Follow the online instructions. Use the URL "CharlineAndJamie.com" (without the quotes) if asked to enter the address of the site you want to allow.

Pop-up Controls Not Working
If the Pop-up Controls options are not working, try clearing your current browser cache.

    Google Toolbar Configuration

While using any web sites that have pop-ups you want to see, click the pop-up blocker button, on your Google Toolbar, to add that site to your whitelist. (The whitelist is never actually displayed.) Repeat this process as you find websites where you want to see pop-ups.

If you'd like to remove a site from the pop-up blocker whitelist, simply visit that page and click the pop-up blocker button. The button text will change from "Site popups allowed" to the count of your blocked ads. This indicates that the pop-up blocker has been re-activated on this site.

To completely disable the pop-up blocker, open the Toolbar Options window and clear the checkbox next to pop-up blocker in the Accessories section.
